This paper tackles the most important discretizationrneffects appearing when simulating sea surface aroundrnships. Their impact on model parameters is used to assessrnwhich approximations are mandatory for reaching affordablerntrade-off between simulation loads and data accuracy.rnThis study has been developed with GRECOSAR,rna SAR simulator of complex targets based on a highfrequencyrnRCS prediction tool. Two sea surface modelsrnare considered: one based on a two-scale approach andrnanother dealing with sea spectrum theory. Their reliabilityrnhas been assessed with probabilistic tests applied tornopen sea scenarios. The results show that realistic clutterrnis by now only achieved for the first model. The secondrnone appears to need more computer requirements orrna better tuned modeling methodology.
