DEMOSS will develop and demonstrate elements of arnmarine oil spill detection and prediction system based onrnsatellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and other spacerndata. In addition, models for prediction of sea surfacernpollution drift will be developed and tested. The projectrnimplements field experiments to study the effect ofrnartificial crude oil and oil derivatives films on short windrnwaves and multi-frequency (Ka-, Ku-, X-, and C-band)rndual polarization radar backscatter power and Dopplerrnshift at different wind and wave conditions. On the basisrnof these and other available experimental data, thernpresent model of short wind waves and radar scatteringrnwill be improved and tested.rnA new approach for detection and quantification of thernoil slicks/spills in satellite SAR images is developed thatrncan discriminate human oil spills from biogenic slicksrnand look-alikes in the SAR images. New SAR images arernobtained in coordination with the field experiments torntest the detection algorithm. Satellite SAR images fromrnarchives as well as from new acquisitions will bernanalyzed for the Black/Caspian/Kara/Barents seas torninvestigate oil slicks/spills occurrence statistics.rnA model for oil spills/slicks transport and evolution isrndeveloped and tested in ice-infested arctic seas, includingrnthe Caspian Sea. Case studies using the model will bernconducted to simulate drift and evolution of oil spillrnevents observed in SAR images. The results of thernproject will be disseminated via scientific publicationsrnand by demonstration to users and agencies working withrnmarine monitoring. The project lasts for two years (2007rn– 2009) and is funded under INTAS Thematic Call withrnESA 2006.
