Michigan’s Model Highway Noise Ordinance: Technical Issues and Approaches

Michigan’s Model Highway Noise Ordinance is an initiative by the Michigan Department ofTransportation (MDOT), to encourage local governments to plan and to zone land adjacent to existinghighways to protect future land development from becoming incompatible with anticipated highway noise.It provides noise ordinance language and technical guidance to help local governments meet arequirement of MDOT’s Type II noise barrier program – adoption of a highway noise ordinance. Inaddition to quality of life benefits, this action is expected to preserve the investment in highways andprevent additional expensive noise mitigation measures which compete with other road improvements forfunding.
