Only two years after the ground breaking, construction of the new 6,317 m~2 (68,000 ft~2) Ray W.Herrick Laboratories Center for High Performance Buildings at Purdue University is complete.A portion of the new building has been designed for perception based engineering research. Assuch, noise and vibration control were among the more significant design factors. The perceptionbased engineering laboratory is intended to be a flexible space, allowing for a broad range ofsimultaneous experimentation. The noise and vibration control design were complicated by theneed for a faceted floor to allow for vibration isolation of simultaneous experimentation, the labsproximity to a roadway, a requirement for extensive exterior windows and a large exterior doorwhich had to face the roadway, and incorporation of a pit for a large tri-axial shaker. This paperpresents the criteria and design process, and describes the noise control system components,including those unique components that were designed and custom fabricated for the project.
