In the United Republic of Tanzania, practices involving radioactive sources arernfound in medicine, agriculture, industries, research and education. Apart from knownrnstochastic and deterministic effects, it is now of great concern that radioactive sourcesrncan also be deployed in terrorist activities if effective safety and security mechanisms arernnot instituted. Therefore it is necessary to ensure that, from the initial stage of use of thernsource to its final disposal, adequate security measures are put in place to prevent anyrnrelated malevolent acts. The paper describes Tanzania’s national strategy to meet thisrnobjective. The strategy involves the institution of regulatory control, the education andrntraining of regulatory staff and stakeholders, the collection of disused sources, thernsecurity upgrading of facilities with high risk, emergency preparedness and internationalrncooperation. While the situation is encouraging, future needs have been identified asrnsearching, locating and recovering orphan and disused sources, monitoring of borderrncrossings to detect illegal source movements, strengthening security during the transportrnof radioactive sources, increasing the capability and basic knowledge of firstrnresponders, collection and conditioning of sources no longer being used, and scrap metalrnmonitoring.
