EVALUATION OF NATIONAL STRATEGIES FOR REGAINING CONTROL OVER RADIOACTIVE SOURCES IN THE UNITED REPUBLIC OF TANZANIA

In recent years, almost every part of the world there is a global warning of terrorist. In this matter the safety and security of radioactive materials are very important. In Tanzania technologies that make use of radiation sources and radioactive material is growing day to day. Radioactive materials in the country are used in Agricultural, research establishments, biological and medical laboratories, industrial, universities, mining and medical centers. The safety record of the technologies and their application is good, but the security of radioactive materials has been an issue of concern. The first incidence of illicit trafficking of radioactive materials has been reported in 1996 and other more reported events in 2002. This paper intends to evaluate the national strategies for regaining control over radioactive sources in the country. The evaluation strategies involve regulatory framework; radioactive sources inventories; import/export of radioactive sources; management of disused sources; scrap metal monitoring. Others are search of orphan sources; illicit trafficking in country; USDOE and INNSErv mission and projects and activities Tanzania participating in IAEA.
