Does `anybody' really want (or need) vehicle navigation aids?

The author asserts that developers of vehicle navigation aidsnshould not persist in using an intradisciplinary approach to solving anninterdisciplinary problem. It is demonstrated that research in differingndisciplines can be intertwined, and that theories and models often cannbe borrowed. It is suggested that though interdisciplinary results cannbe supporting, caution should be taken when interpreting these. Thenauthor reviews current research in spatial knowledge acquisition inncomputer science, psychology, and geography, and how these models cannenhance vehicle navigation aid development. Current research inncognitive psychology and environmental behavior related to thenpresentation of driving instructions to drivers is discussed
