Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) aims at introducing students to new concepts in traditional curriculum subjects (often the humanities, but science&technology are rapidly closing this gap), by means of a foreign language as instrument of communication. Its target is enhancing the pupils' learning experience by exploiting the connections between the two subjects. This is particularly rewarding where there is a direct overlap between the foreign language and the content subject. Students need time to get accustomed to CLIL challenges, but once familiar with the new working methodology, motivation and focus demonstrably increase making progress possible and likely at faster-than-usual rates, both in the content subject and in the foreign language. Research indicates that there are no detrimental effects on students, irrespective of subject.
