The effects of catechol on the electrochemical oxidation of Sn(II) in methane sulfonic acid (MSA) solutions have been studied using electrochemical and spectroscopic methods. in situ UV-visible absorption spectroelectrochemical measurements revealed that Sn(II) and catechol coexisting in the bath interact so as to inhibit the electrochemical oxidation of them each other. Electrochemical crystal quartz microbalance (EQCM) measurements also indicated that anodic polarization in the MSA solution containing Sn(II) ions and catechol induced the formation of the reaction product which suppressed the further oxidation of Sn(II) and catechol. The characterization of the reaction product by XRD, XPS, and SIMS was carried out and the results showed that the reaction product seemed to be polymeric tin compound having phenol group.
