The change towards lower VOC emission from paint systems can be achieved by using a light induced curing of 100% waterborne or 100% solid coatings. We have designed (1) a white pigmented waterborne latex formulation based on acrylates or allyl/vinylethers for outdoor/indoor paints that is photocurable under visible lights. A suitable photoinitiator was able to achieve, in air, a >95% conversion of the acrylic bonds in a 100 μm thick paint film. The cured paint showed an excellent solvent resistance towards THF for example and they also exhibited a hardness up to 30% higher than the comparable VOC containing paints. The effects of various parameter on the film properties are discussed.
