The Shakespeare Theater Company is in the process of constructing a new 700 to 800-seat theatre in the heart of Washington D.C. The construction incorporates a concrete box-in-box design intended originally for airborne isolation of noises due to the multi-level parking garage below,rnstreet traffic, a nearby fire station and large-events arena and other office spaces in this building with 11 stories above ground level. This type of construction readily lends itself to the incorporation of a base vibration isolation scheme using natural rubber isolators which became necessary due to the proximity of two active subway lines. Information is presented on the measured level of vibration at the site, of predicted level of ground borne noise with and without the base isolation scheme, on the preliminary design of the rubber isolator bearings and on a simplified finite-element analysis of the supporting structure below the theater box.
