Evapotranspiration cover (ET cover) systems use evaporation and transpiration processes to minimize percolation into the underlying waste. The objectives of this study are to evaluate ET covers based on their water balance performance and to evaluate the efficiency of ET cover system in simple landfill percolation controlling. Experiments were conducted to measure water flow processes and water balance components in a bare soil cover and different ET covers. Results show that vegetation plays a critical role in controlling water balance of the ET covers. In a 60 cm soil profile, the soil water storage capacities are 97.2 mm and 62.8 mm with and without a vegetation cover, respectively. The percolation amount in the bare soil is 2.1 times as that in the vegetation covered soil.
