Electrocatalysis of active carbon (AC) supported HAuCl_4 electrode was studied for electrochemical carbonylation of MeOH with CO to dimethyl oxalate (DMO, 1) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC, 2). 1 was the major product at low potentials (+0.7 V ~ +1.2 V vs. Ag/AgCl), in contrast, 2 was the major one at high potentials (+1.2 V ~ +1.5 V). The carbonylation selectivities to 1 and 2 could be controlled by the anode potential. A model for reaction mechanism based on experimental results was proposed.
