The coatings on tablets, patches, and other time-release delivery systems are designed to deliver the active ingredient uniformly over a period of time. Often this is accomplished with an amorphous barrier that either dissolves or permits drug migration by diffusion. In either case, the characterization of the glass transition region allows prediction of the drug delivery effcacy. This paper gives methodology for characterizing Tg of such systems using DSC and other techniques. Also to be covered are techniques for testing active ingredient uniformity and for surface analysis on a micro scale.
