High hardness and toughness are desirable mechanical properties of tungsten carbides (WC) which make them useful as wear resistant materials for cutting tools and die sets, etc. However, these same properties which make WC so useful for many applications in the manufacturing industry also make them difficult to machine into desired shapes.
