LNG containment system (LCS) of No.96 is a membrane type structurernwhich covers the inner steel hull of the LNG ship. The LCS of No.96 isrna box system which consists of two stacked plywood boxes filled byrnperlite grains. Traditionally, the study of LCS No.96 was based on shellrnfinite elements.rnThe shell element model can predict neither the failure mode which isrnrelated to shear through the thickness of the plywood plate nor thernstresses related to the crushing of primary and secondary bulkheads.rnTherefore, a finite element model consisting of the coupling of solidrnand shell elements is introduced. In this study, a static analysis of thernstress distribution is conducted. The finite element model is applied tornstudy the sensitivity of the element type and size as well as to carry outrnan optimization of the size of the solid regions.rnThe effect of the material properties as a function of the temperature onrnthe buckling capacity of the LCS No.96 is shown. Recommendationsrnon finite element modelling of the LCS No.96 are made.
