A four-compartment, anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR)rnincorporating granular sludge biomass (GSB) wasrnoperated at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) inrnthe range of 3 to 24 hours using dilute aircraft deicingrnfluid (ADF) with different chemical oxygen demandrn(COD) concentrations (300, 500 and 750 mg/L) at organicrnloading rates (OLRs) between 0.3 and 6 kg COD/m3/d. Arntotal of 15 experimental runs conducted in continuousrnmode achieved COD removal efficiencies ranging fromrn61 to 93%. Better COD removal efficiencies werernachieved at the highest concentration of ADF and HRTsrnover 6 hrs. For a shorter HRT of 3 hrs, removal efficiencyrnwas still acceptable, but additional treatment would bernnecessary to satisfy effluent discharge standards. Methanernproduction was close to the theoretical value of 0.39 LrnCH4/g COD removed at 35°C. Low biomass yield andrnlow endogenous decay coefficient were observed.rnApplication of a first-order kinetic empirical compartmentrnmodel was developed to describe performance of thernGSB-ABR. The model predicted response (COD removalrnefficiency) was not in good agreement with the observedrnexperimental results.
