SOCIO-ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF DISCONNECTION OF STANDPIPES IN BONTLENG AND LEHUTUTU IN BOTSWANA

The study assessed socio-economic effects of therndisconnection of communal water standpipes among poorrnsegments of communities in the rural village of Lehututurnin Kgalagadi District and the suburban area of Bontlengrnin Gaborone, the capital city of Botswana. A socialrnsurvey, key informant interviews, and documentaryrnanalysis were used to collect data. The study was carriedrnout from August 2004 to June 2005. It was found thatrndisconnection of public standpipes adversely affectedrnpoor members of the communities. Public authoritiesrnwere adamant that access to free water encouragedrnwasteful and illegal use, and vandalism, contrary torngovernment policy.
