SUSTAINABLE A PROACHES TO DECENTRALIZED WASTEWATER SYSTEMS WITH EMPHASIS ON DEVELOPING COUNTRIES IN SEMI-ARID REGIONS

The paper discusses some aspects of sustainablernapplications of decentralized wastewater systems, where arnsafe and reliable effluent reuse is the major objective ofrnthe project. Sustainability is discussed in terms ofrnenvironmental, technical, economic and socialrndimensions. More emphasis is given on technicalrnsustainability, which defines the requirements for a soundrndesign/application in terms of satisfying quantitative andrnqualitative parameters. A method for assessment ofrndifferent wastewater treatment technologies is suggested,rnin order to support the best choice, based on definedrntechnical, economic and environmental criteria.
