In recent years there has been increased interest in both anaerobic wastewater treatment technologies and decentralized approaches to wastewater management. These topics are brought together in the concept of DEWATS (decentralized wastewater treatment systems), which has been developed and implemented by the German NGO Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA).
