摘要

Mussels survive in turbulent sea by robust underwater adhesion to all kinds of wave and wind-swept substrata,as well as highly stiff and highly extensible surface coatings using a proteinaceous byssus.Such remarkable features make the byssus a source of inspiration for the development of novel adhesives, coatings and biomaterials which can be introduced in a similarly turbulent aqueous environment in the human body. The mussel byssus resembles a bundle of threads tipped with adhesive plaques and contains roughly 25-30 different proteins.
