COMPARISONS OF SCIAMACHY SULFUR DIOXIDE OBSERVATIONS

First results from two algorithms for the retrieval of SO_2rntotal columns from SCIAMACHY nadir measurementsrnare presented. The algorithms, which were developedrnat the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (BIRA) andrnthe Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) at the Universityrnof Bremen, respectively are both able to detectrnvolcanic emissions and strong pollution events. Comparisonrnwith results from applying the same methods tornSCIAMACHY’s precursor instrument GOME show goodrnagreement.
