Water vapor mixing ratio and temperature profilesrncarried out by a Raman-Mie-Rayleigh lidar have beenrnused for the validation of the MIPAS instrument onrnboard of ENVISAT. The measurements have beenrnperformed at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences andrnClimate of the Italian National Research Councilrn(ISAC-CNR) in Rome-Tor Vergata. Measurementrnsessions were carried out during the years 2002 andrn2003, and some at the beginning of 2004. The lidarrnrecords in coincidence with ENVISAT overpassesrnwere 20, but only 4 comparisons with MIPAS 4.61rnversion have been possible up to now, because thernreprocessing of the MIPAS data for 2003 is still inrnprogress. The lidar profiles are complemented byrnradiosonde observations. In the altitude range wherernthe lidar profile overlaps MIPAS, no markedrndifferences were found in the water vapor mixing ratio.rnFrom the tropopause up, MIPAS data appear beingrngenerally lower than lidar and radiosonde values. Therncomparison of the temperature shows some differencesrnmostly close to the stratopause, where the MIPAS datarnappear systematically lower than the lidar ones.
