DISTRIBUTION OF INTELLIGENCE TO MICROPROCESSOR BASED ANALYZERS AND FIELD DEVICES FOR PROCESS CONTROL

New advances in microprocessor technology have enabled us to develop a number of process control and data acquisition devices which can be distributed over a data highway in a plant. Each of these devices has an intelligence and performs functions dictated by the task assigned. Until we have a truly reliable and economical intelligent sensor/transmitter with a general purpose communication interface unit available in the marketplace, we will continue to rely on an intelligent remote multiplexer for a plant-wide data base for process analysis and optimization. The intent of this paper is to present a philosophy of managing process information and making it available to plant operating personnel in the form of operator displays, trends and management information reports.
