Contemporary opinions are that the Owners and Operators of MGP facilities were cognizant of the injurious health, and now recognize adverse environmental impacts of their gas manufacturing operations. These beliefs are based on the supposition that there was a body of literature in professional journals during the era of gas manufacturing which disseminated and documented this information. A review of industry publications for 60 years, beginning in 1905 through 1965, challenges this opinion. This paper will review contemporaneous literature implicitly intended for the manufactured gas industry. This review focuses on the disposal of waste products, sources of pollution and the environmental impacts known at the time of operation. This review was conducted to in an attempt to investigate the “expected and intended” aspects associated with insurance recovery for environmental damages.
