In this paper, two methods for modelling fracture with finite elements are elaborated. In the cohesive surface methodology (CSM) cracks run along finite element boundaries, while in the partition of unity method (PUM) cracks may propagate arbitrarily through finite elements. Both models introduce displacement discontinuities representing cracks in the material. Consequently, the constitutive behaviour in the continuum and at the discontinuity can be separated. The continuum is assumed to remain elastic, while at the discontinuity a plasticity-based cohesive zone law is introduced.
