The capability of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 mutantsrnFRS1 and FRB1, characterized by a high reducingrnactivity, to generate electricity was measured in microbialrnfuel cells (MFC) of different types. The reducing activityrnof these mutants was previously identified with respect tornthe rate of discoloration (reduction) of methylene blueё, arndye that served as an electron transfer mediator. Thernpresent study demonstrated that the rate of MBrndiscoloration was in direct correlation with the level ofrnvoltage in MFC of the above strains. In case when thernmutants were used, the parameter in MFC proved to bern30-40% greater than in the case of the parent strain. In therncourse of this investigation MFC characteristics werernidentified, optimal electrode materials and ion-selectivernmembranes selected, and MFC laboratory mockupsrnmanufactured.
