Phycobilisorae exists in Rhodophyta, Cynobacterium, partial Dinoflagellate and Cryptophyta. Algaes depend on this special structure to harvest light and to photosynthesis. It is composed of phycobiliproteins, linker proteins and pigments while phycobiliproteins consist of phycoerythrin (PE), phycocyanin ( PC) and allophyco-cyanin (APC). Other than take part in photosynthesis, PE also has some other physiological effects, such as effecting the structure of phycobilisome and the color of the algaes. (Amano et al. , 1993) As a kind of fluoresce, PE has been used broadly in medical, food, costume industry and ecological detect of the ocean. (Kaixian et al. , 1993; Cowles et al. , 1993) On the other hand, the PE sequence is highly conserved, may be used as evolve marker of photosynthesis organism. ( Apt et al. , 1993)rnUsing special chemicals, Zhang (1996) obtained some color mutants from wild tye. They had different color and biochemistry characters from the wild type. Analysis of their PE gene may disclose some facet of these changes, and further contribute to the study of phycobiliprotein and the mechanism of photosynthesis.rnPCR was applied to clone PE gene of wild type and its color mutant (grl 80) of Gracilaria lemaneiformis (G.L), the nucleotide sequence were further analyzed. The result showed that the nucleotide sequence of PE of G.L was conserved, the similarity between G.L and other red algae with known PE sequence were from 78.4% to 81.0%.
