When assessing the environmental noise impact of an industrial facility on nearby noise sensitivernreceptors, it is essential to accurately determine the sound power level of the outdoor noiserngenerating equipment before attenuation calculations can be made. In some industrial settings, itrnis difficult to isolate the sound of a specific piece of equipment due to the close proximity ofrnother noisy equipment or reflections of equipment and building structures. Unless great care hasrnbeen exercised, the measurements will be contaminated by background noise.rnThis paper compares the in-situ sound measurement results of industrial equipment usingrnthe sound pressure and sound intensity methods. Comparative sound measurements werernconducted on different types of noise sources including one exhaust fan, one cooling tower, onernair-cooled condensing unit, and a custom built structure. The comparative method can also bernused to characterize the background sound level.
