Fabrication of Calcium Alginate Microcapsules Containing Living Cells Using Microfluidic Device

A microfluidic device has been used to produce size- controlled polymeric microcapsules containing living cells. The diameter of microcapsules was controlled by changing the flow conditions. The multifunction microfluidic device could produce 20-50μm calcium alginate microcapsules with the coefficients of variation (CV) below 3.7%. Based on this method, we succeeded in encapsulating Saccharomyces cerevisiae and it shows that the calcium alginate microcapsules could be used in immobilized microorganism culture and offered a favorable microenvironment for cell growth.
