Flow past a translating and spinning circular cylinder is studied to investigate the maximum lift that can be generated at larger than critical rotation rates #OMEGA#=4. The obtained solution shows shock-like changes of the calculated loads indicating nonlinear temporal instability of the flow. This effect is associated with vortex shedding from regions of concentrated vorticity and also provides the necessary limit of the generated lift.
