Mechanistic studies concerned with the fire retardance of a additive fire retardant system of poly(methyl methacrylate) PMMA containing tricresyl phosphate (TEP) and a reactive system of methyl methacrylate and diethyl-2-(acryloyloxy)ethylphosphate (DEAEP) copolymer have already been reported. These studies showed the improvements in the fire retardancy when the phosphate group was incorporated into the polymer. The purpose of this work is to establish the different modes of action of the additive and reactive fire retardants and to identify the cause of the different behaviour. A combination of TG with EGA, DSC, laser and microfurnace pyrolysis mass spectrometry and isothermal pyrolysis GC-MS are reported for the different systems.
