Hydroxy double salts (HDSs) are layered nanostructured materials with metal hydroxide layers separated by exchangeable anions. Zinc/zinc (Zn/Zn-), zinc/copper (Zn/Cu-), and zinc/cobalt (Zn/Co-) HDSs were prepared for use as polymer modifiers. A series of Zn-containing hydroxy double salts was added to bulk-polymerized polystyrene and thermal degradation properties of the composite materials were found, via cone calorimetry, to be dependent on the composition of metals in the layers and the identity of the intercalated anions. The structural elucidation and thermal characterization of the HDSs were afforded through the use of powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier Transfer Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Adding HDSs modified by the encapsulation of phosphorous and nitrogen containing intercalates in their nanogallery space enhanced the thermal stability of the polystyrene composite materials.
