Flammability of a series of brominated bisphenol A epoxy systems has been examined using the cone calorimetry (CC) and pyrolysis-combustion flow calorimetry (PCFC). Results of the CC tests indicate that the average heat release rate of these materials decreases with increasing mass fraction of bromine. Further analysis shows that the decrease is caused by a reduction of the gas-phase combustion efficiency and, to a lesser degree, by the formation of char. In a separate set of experiments, gaseous products of the thermal degradation of the materials were added to a methane stream feeding a laminar diffusion flame. In that case, presence of bromine resulted in a slight increase of the combustion efficiency of the gaseous products.
