The design of a naturally ventilated atrium wasrnassessed using both wind tunnel and CFD methodsrnto appraise and modify the response of the system tornwind forces. The initial design was expected to bernsusceptible to flow reversal due to wind forcesrnopposing and ultimately defeating buoyancy forces.rnSeveral design options were assessed by bothrnmethods.rnBoth the methods were able to provide goodrninformation to guide the design development.rnCrucially, the information and guidance from bothrnmethods was consistent; that is either method couldrnhave led the design development to a similar finalrnresult. Each method has, of course, advantages andrnlimitations, and to some extent these arerncomplementary.
