CAD manufacturers are providing anrnincreasing amount of integrated buildingrndesign software. These integrated CAD systemsrnhave few, if any, facilities to assessrnbuilding performance. The building designrnprofession is increasing its use ofrnperformance assessment tools for traditionalrnand refurbishment design and not justrntechnologically advanced design. Performancernassessment tools will continue to grow inrnimportance as building technology movesrntowards providing Intelligent Buildings.rnThis paper will describe a currentrnproject aimed at providing a suite ofrncomputer-based tools which constitute anrnIntegrated Building Design System capable ofrnintegrating the building design processes.rnThis software system is called BIDS and isrnbased upon dynamic simulation software forrnassessing building performance integratedrnwith other software tools such as CADrnsystems.rnBIDS offers the construction industry arnwhole life-cycle solution to building designrnand operation. BIDS achieves this by:rn- being used throughout the design processrnby the architect and other design teamrnmembers operating on a single model ofrnthe building.rn- upon completion, the design informationrncontained within the BIDS system will bernused to help commission the buildingrn- the use of the BIDS system continuesrnthrough the building's life forming thernbasis of an intelligent control systemrnfor the building.
