THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF CFD TO WIND ENGINEERING PROBLEMS

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software isrnincreasingly being used to predict the effects of windrnon buildings and on the people in and around them.rnIt is well suited to studying the effects of wind speedrnon pedestrian comfort within and around buildings.rnThe technique is known as Computational WindrnEngineering (CWE).rnThis paper presents examples of how the authorsrnhave used commercial CFD codes for CWE to studyrnthe inclusion of new buildings in a campus at thernUniversity of Cambridge and inform the design teamrnof its effects on human comfort. Another example isrnshown where comfort was studied, involving thernanalysis of complex fabric structures. Key issues ofrninterest to designers are highlighted and areasrnrequiring further work are identified.
