Methodological Issues in Systems Management Suites Deployment

The promise and failure of systems managementrnsuites has become a critical issue for organizationsrnattempting to gain control of the distributed enterprise.rnThese expensive suites (solutions that perform enterprisernmanagement functions, such as software distribution,rninventory, network management, etc.) promise to providerna single integrated solution that can address a completernset of enterprise management needs. A survey of ITrnprofessionals was used (1) to identify organizations’rncommitment to suite technology and/or best-of-breedrnpoint solutions, (2) to assess organizations’ ability tornimplement suite technology throughout the enterprise, (3)rnto examine the costs associated with suite deployment,rnand (4) to identify the essential steps and key obstacles tornsuite deployment and management. Results of the surveyrnindicate that until the issues of deployment methodology,rnasset inventory management, and deployment costs,rnorganizations may not realize the full potential of systemrnmanagement suites.
