A Social Analysis of Software Development Teams:Three Models and their Differences

In this paper we analyze the socio-technical activityrncalled software development by focusing on the socialrnperspective. We do so to pursue two questions: What canrnwe learn about software development by focusing on itsrnsocial aspects and what insight does a social perspectiverngive us regarding the production methods, techniques andrntools uses in software development? From the socialrnperspective, this analysis suggests three models ofrnsoftware teams. For each of these we outline, compare,rnand comment on issues with the way the task, methodsrnand tools are conceptualized. We include a briefrndiscussion of hybrid models such as those used atrnMicrosoft and other packaged software vendors.
