Boundary Conditions for the Multiscale Analysis of Composites Featuring Local RVE Damage

Current semi-concurrent, multiscale algorithms are unable to explicitly model the interaction between various damage modes, especially when the modes exist in different length scales. The overall objective of this project was to investigate the explicit modeling of local RVE microscale damage and to address the effect of multiscale boundary conditions on the initiation and evolution of damage for non-periodic loading regimes. To this end, a semi-concurrent multiscale scheme has been implemented within the ABAQUS finite element modeling software. Additionally, the use of cohesive zone modeling and the extended-Finite Element Method simultaneously within a 2D RVE are explored. The development of permissible non-periodic boundary conditions is discussed and current limitations to their implementation and evaluation are addressed.
