Strength and Failure Modes of Thick-Adhesive Bonded Joints of Glass Fabric/Vinyl Ester Composite Laminates

In this paper, a comprehensive investigation has been conducted to determinernstructural strength and failure modes of thick adhesive bonded joints made of glass-fabricrnreinforced vinyl ester composite laminates. A large number of experiments werernperformed on double lap-shear composite joints with different bond thicknesses and overlaprnlengths. The results reveal some of the fundamental nature of deformation, damage and failure inrnthick adhesive-bonded composite joints. Specifically, the following critical issues on thernintegrity of thick-adhesive composite joints were addressed: (1) curing and post-cure ofrnthe adhesive and its effect on bonded composite joints; (2) load-deformation characteristics ofrnthe joints under axial tensile loading; (3) the effect of thick adhesive bond thickness; (4)rnthe Influence of bond overlap length; (4) manufacturing defects and their effects, and (5)rnfailure modes affected by the aforementioned material and structural parameters.
