THE IMPORTANCE OF TRAINING ON SAMPLE HANDLING AND CONDITIONING

Analyzer professionals charged with the oversight of sample conditioning for on-line analyzers, orrnperforming the task of collecting spot or composite samples, have tremendous influence on analysisrnaccuracy. All of the expenditures for acquiring, installing and operating an analyzer are completelyrnundermined if the sample delivered to the analyzer does not represent the process from which it wasrncollected. One of the greatest influences on the proficiency of the personnel charged with samplernhandling and conditioning is the training that they receive. This paper explores the relationship betweenrnproperly trained technicians and delivery of representative samples to the analyzer. The importance ofrnprofessionals that understand and can apply the science behind company standards that are consistentrnwith industry standards is examined. Also presented in this paper is an approach for implementing arntraining program to help even the most experienced technicians become immediately more effective inrndealing with the design, installation, operation and maintenance of sample handling and conditioningrnequipment and more knowledgeable of proper sample collection methods. The use of training to sustainrnsample quality is covered along with topics such as curriculum, venue, live instruction, testing andrnevaluation.
