After a detailed analysis of the disadvantages of current methods for the design of asphaltaggregate ratio, a GTM method was proposed to simulate the rolling conditions at the construction site and take the mechanical parameters as the design indexes. The results obtained from the proposed GTM method was compared with those obtained from the Marshall method, and proper engineering procedures for GTM method were proposed. Results showed that the performance of asphalt mixtures designed by the GTM method was much better than that designed by the Marshall method. An entitative project showed that the pavement compactness of the GTM-designed mixture was of a high level with a void volume of less than 6%, despite of the low asphalt-aggregate ratio and high compactness standard of the design.
