CREATIVITY, CREATIVE THERAPY AND PERSONAL AND COMMUNITY CHANGE

The case study in this paper focuses on creative writing as a way of exploring issues around creativity and creative therapy. A degree course, Creative Therapy Studies, at Bradford College U.K, gives the practical context of the debate, which ranges into discussion of the politics of participation as a basis for well-being through creativity. The paper also includes discussion of the philosophical roots of approaches to therapy and suggests that the New Science, particularly chaos theory, offers an interesting path for exploration in this area. The authors have their own particular interests. The observations of practice the paper come from Carol Laffey, who is a writer and also a creative writing practitioner. Teresa Iles has an interest in writing and personal change which dates back to a research paper, Anti-Depression Dialogues 1991), and a book, All Sides of the Subject (Iles 1992) which arose from a workshop held by Dale Spender (London 1988), the theme being women and auto/biography.
