Experiments with fluorescent particle tracking method have shown that for weak adhesion, the thermodynamic work of adhesion is not the crucial parameter in peeling. Increasing the ease of interfacial slippage by modifying the molecular mobility of the substrate causes an unusual decrease in the peel force. A theoretical model accounting for the effect of interfacial slippage on the interface fracture energy is presented for a deeper understanding of the physical mechanisms of adhesive peeling. Our investigation shows that the interfacial slippage induced by the concomitant Poisson contraction of the adhesive in peeling test has an important influence on the critical fracture energy.
