Engine through-life cost has been one of the most important parts in design and operation of an airliner. A significant proportion of total cost is attributed to fuel consumption and engine maintenance, with the latter being governed by the life consumption of the hot section of the gas turbine. This paper presents the effect of engine rate control and flight conditions on total engine life consumption, with a direct impact on through-life cost. 'Turbomatch' gas turbine performance and 'Hermes' aircraft performance tools have been developed in Cranfield University and are utilized for the prediction of the effect of mission characteristics of a regional airliner on engine life consumption.
