The results of ARC experiments on nitrocellulose (NC) show that both the onsetrntemperature (T_o) and the activation energy for the thermal decomposition depend on samplernmass. The effect of different initial atmosphere was also investigated. To values of 124 ± 5 andrn131 ± 5℃ were obtained with 0.5 g samples under ambient air and argon atmospheres,rnrespectively.rnThe thermal decomposition of NC was also studied using HFC at various pressures ofrnargon between ambient and 27 MPa. It was found that the "true" onset temperature and the widthrnof the corresponding exotherms is a strong function of the initial pressure. The measured Tornvalues are found to be similar to the ARC results even though the sample masses used in thernHFC experiments were an order of magnitude smaller.rnIn addition, the preliminary results of a study conducted using TG-DTA-FTIR-MS in airrnand in helium are presented. The effect of an oxidizing atmosphere on the thermal decompositionrnof NC was investigated, and the gaseous products of the decomposition were determined.
