The interpretation of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) as a screening method forrnpredicting explosive properties of chemicals has been investigated. Test methods for detonation,rndeflagration, and heating under confinement for classifying energetic chemicals forrntransportation are specified by UN Recommendations, which now include decomposition energyrnscreening criteria. It has been demonstrated by Yoshida et al. (Safety of reactive chemicals andrnpyrotechnics, T. Yoshida, 1995) that energies of reaction (-ΔH) and extrapolated onsetrntemperatures (T_o) determined by DSC can create a straight line on a logarithmic plot and canrndistinguish between benign compounds and compounds capable of detonating or deflagrating.rnThis correlation has been investigated by Bodman (Use of DSC in Screening for ExplosivernProperties, G.T. Bodman NATAS, 2002) with the aim of using DSC data to estimate thernexplosive potential of a ma terial and, thus, reduce requirements for additional tests.rnThe onset temperature of a compound is a single point on the DSC curve, but additionalrninformation from the DSC curve, such as peak height, peak width, and aspect ratio, should makernpossible more effective correlations with explosion data. The objective of this paper is to discussrnrelationships among DSC parameters and the UN Gap test, Koenen test, and Time/Pressure testrnand to demonstrate that DSC parameters can be used to screen chemicals for explosive behavior.rnFor enhanced confidence with the indicated threshold values, these correlations must be testedrnwith data from additional systems.
