Thermal Properties of Hybrid Nanocomposite Materials

New materials that contain both organic and inorganic components have potentially newrnchemical and physical properties that can even lie outside those bracketed by their components.rnA series of hybrid polymer-inorganic nanocomposite materials was synthesized using variousrnpoly(ethylene oxide)-zeolite mixtures. The series included mixtures of PEO-LiX and PEOGlyLi~+,rnof varying concentrations (where Gly = 3-Glycidoxy propyltrimethoxysilane, LiX is Li~+rnexchanged nanoNaX, and the Li~+ source is LiCF_3SO_3; for all the Li+ containing samples, thernPEO's O : Li~+ mole ratio is 12 : 1). Their glass transition and melting temperatures wererndetermined using a Perkin-Elmer Pyris-1 differential scanning calorimeter. The thermalrnconductivity of the samples was measured using a TC-30? from Mathis Instruments.rnMeasurements on natural composite materials, ivory and fishbone, will also be discussed.
