Numerical simulation of penetration processes by applying the Lagrangian description is reviewed in this investigation. By Lagrangian description we mean a formulation of mechanical evolution which refers to a fixed reference frame in space. This is in contrast to the Eulerian description in which motion is referred to the instantaneous or current coordinate frame. Numerically, the Lagrangian description translates into conditions under which the mesh or cell deforms under the applied load. For the Eulerian description, materials move through the fixed mesh. Specific difficulties associated with Lagrangian penetration simulations are identified. Some remedies and results are presented. Although Lagrangian techniques have been proven to be successful in many penetration simulations, some fundamental issues remain to be resolved.
